This video is actually last year's spring balcony garden tour as I wasn't able to film enough content from this spring. • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden 14 днів тому

      Hi Jeff, that's a good question and I'm not actually sure of the answer 🙂 it's advised to just leave them as they are until the bulbs go dormant when you can cut them hard back. I've never pruned them for the purpose of making them grow bushier, rather to keep them looking tidy. I've found that lots of light is the biggest factor in whether they grow luscious or not and my outside iron crosses have always looked the fullest and healthiest when grown outside. I'd give it a go and see if you notice a difference. Would love to hear your results 🙂

      Hi Syed, that's a great question, as far as I know you can use the same male flower to pollinate more than one female flower. I've always done it like that and have had no problems. The key to is make sure the pollen grains reach the female stigma. Hope that helps 😊

    Good Advice, other site said to discard bulbs growing in containers.....

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden 24 дні тому

      Hello, I just want to mention that some people choose to discard bulbs after one season as they might not bloom as well the following season. This can happen but I've generally found if you allow the bulbs to complete their growth cycle and allow them to tank up with food during their vegetative growth stage then they flower just fine the following year. I find it a shame to throw away healthy bulbs but it is of course gardener's choice 🤗

    Do the bulbs always have to be somewhat exposed as yours is? Or can I plant the Hyacinth bulbs a little bit lower so that it is deeper into the soil and all I can see is the leaves.

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden 26 днів тому

      Hello, yes you can plant your bulbs at the specific depth they like to sit at on the soil, for hyacinths it's around 15cm. I normally plant all my bulbs under the soil surface, the hyacinth I used in the video was actually bought potted up from a garden centre 🌱

  • @tingtiing

    Hi where do you buy your pots from? Especially big ones like 5 gallone for eggplants. And can you make a video about which pot size and depth for what plant? Thank you so much. I‘ve just bought plants yesterday to start my own balcony garden. I‘m so excited about it.

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden 27 днів тому

      Hi Ting, I buy my pots from a variety of places ranging from garden centres to bargain shops! Anywhere that has good solid pots for a reasonable price and are food grade plastic. In Germany I like Bauhaus, Kodi, Tedi, Butlers or even large supermarkets have garden items. That's a great video idea about what pot size...I have some videos already more or less ready to be posted so i would post after that. The basic rule is that you want the plant to have enough space to put down roots in all directions but snug enough that when you water, the soil doesn't become saturated and waterlogged because the plant can't take up the water fast enough. That's why we start seedlings in trays then transplant into small pots 5-9cm then into larger pots. So cool you're going to start your balcony garden, very excited for you! 🌱🙏🏻😃

    Great video! I have a question since it is my first time caring for tulips. If I decide to keep my bulbs potted can I keep them in soil & do I have to keep watering them as often?

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden 28 днів тому

      Hi Valeria, glad the video helped you! For bulbs I've left in pots I've experimented with both watering/let the bulbs get rained on and not watering the bulbs over their dormancy period. Both ways worked for me, as in the bulbs always flowered the following season. So to answer your question you don't need to water the bulbs over summer but if you have larger pots or pots that need to stay outside you can let them get rained on and it should be fine. Temperature control is actually more important over the dormancy period and the bulbs shouldn't experience temps over 25°C. The other thing to think about if you don't lift your bulbs is you don't know if they are still healthy and so might not grow the following season. However once autumn comes you can start watering again. Hope that helps 😊

    • @balconiagarden

      Hi Cami, yes you can definitely plant them in the open soil and allow them to spread, dividing when necessary. It's such a beautiful sight to see crocus drifts! Hii there, I know this is an old video, but I’m curious to know if these crocosmias bloomed for the summer that year, so I can use your experience as a reference so I’d know what to expect. • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden Місяць тому

      Hi Shannon, I've experimented over the years with both letting the bulbs (that I don't lift) get rained on/watered and not get rained on. I've found both ways worked. What's more important over their dormancy period is that they don't overheat so temps should stay ideally below around 24°C 🌱

    Great advice! What if I want to keep the bulbs in the pot? Will thwy freeze over winter? Do I need to bring them inside? I only have a balcony.

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden Місяць тому

      Hello, spring flowering bulbs are hardy plants that can tolerate every low temperatures when grown under the soil, the challenge when we grow in pots is that they are not as insulated or protected from the winter weather. If the temps drop below °-10 for a period of time, I would bring them inside. It's also important to protect your pots as they could crack if they freeze. Either bring the pots inside for the very cold period or you can wrap the pots in horticultural fleece or bubble wrap and leave them on the balcony. Be aware that if you bring your pots inside your home, this drastic increase in temperature will cause the bulbs to grow as they think spring has arrived so try and put the pots in a cold part of your home, in a cellar for example if you have one.hope that helps!

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden Місяць тому

      Hi Leslie, you haven't done anything wrong 🙂 any plant grown in a pot will dry out quicker than in the open soil and oxalis don't seem to hold water well. The ones I've grown inside look like that too and I grow them as a hanging plant with the stems falling down. The reason they've gone spindly is because they're not getting enough light so they elongate their stems to reach the light. You can't reverse the stem elongation so I would just enjoy their beautiful leaves and see them as a hanging plant this season 😄 I've also found my oxalis have grown the best outside, the maintenance was next to nothing as the rain watered them for me and they had the perfect amount of light. Hope that helps! 😃

      Hello, it sounds like these tulips were grown the entire time in water which is very energy consuming for the bulbs and it will be difficult for them to bloom well again so most people would probably recycle them. If you are determined to try and grow them, I would follow the aftercare advice, store them over summer (provided they are firm and healthy) and then plant them out into pots or the open soil in autumn at a depth of around 15 to 20 cm. It may take a few seasons for them to recover but I always recommend trying things out! Hope that helps 😊

      Hello, you can grow anything you like! I've grown mostly herbs, salads, tomatoes, peppers and salads, which all are compatible with growing in pots 😁

    Is it good to plant outside in the earths soil?

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden Місяць тому

      Hi Eric, yes it's fine to plant in the open soil 🙂 growing in pots has it's advantages such as being able to control the conditions more eg choosing the soil you want to use, position of pots, and control of possible pests and diseases. It also has it's challenges, especially when it comes to watering and insulating the pots as the bulbs are less protected from the elements above the soil level and are more prone to drying out. Bulbs grow perfectly well in the open soil and in mixed beds. I would give it a try!

    Hey, do you have any organic alternatives for a organic liquid fertilizer based nitrogen and or phosphate? and gawwshh im jelly lol🥀

    • @balconiagarden
      @balconiagarden Місяць тому

      Hi Josh, somehow missed your comment! Alternatives for N is something like poultry or cattle manure and for Phosphorus, bone meal or rock phosphate are alternatives. I'd suggest doing some research as to whats the best alternative for you, it will depend on what you're growing, and how easily you can access the fertilisers. Compost is always a fantastic option which can cover both bases. If you have space you could also create your own compost bin, even add worms as their casts are gold! Leaf mould is also an option, just rake some leaves into a plastic bag, keep moist and after some time you'll end up with a natural soil improver 😀

      @@balconiagarden Thank you so very much!! I have been greatly busy with my garden this year and I love every minute of it so I can also apologize for replying late and responding to an old video of yours haha. I toke your advice into consideration and it has becoming greatly appreciated once more! I have no reason to cover my mistakes as I have made many so far but that is part of learning. I started my compost bin 3 months ago and ever since haven't yet gotten anything to turn the compost over, as I was not aware of needing it. Now my compost bin looks like a mushroom factory at the moment lol
